Lately, I have been getting quite overstimulated. And so, I have been jumping among different books and doing little “book tastings” instead of reading in one go.
Books of essays and trivia are especially suited for a mood like this. And of course, I have been reading books on writing to get some perspective as I write my book for highly sensitive writers.
Bibliophile: I bought an ebook version of the beautifully illustrated Bibliophile on sale at BookBub recently, but this is a book that book lovers will really love in physical form (Check out this and my other book recommendations on Bookbub, which is a wonderful site for anyone who loves books.)
This book has lots of great book lists and recommendations (such as recommendations by bookish people, bucket list bookstores, books in different genres, bookstore pets, etc). It will probably add a ton of new books to your reading list!
The Wave in the Mind: This one is a really lovely book of essays on writing, reading, the imagination and just living by the celebrated science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin. I loved many essays including one called Being Taken For Granite in which she talks about how she is “taken for granite” when she is, in fact, like mud. This felt like such an interesting take on creatives and sensitives being perceptive and almost like a surface on which impressions are formed.
Writing in the House of Dreams: This book by Jenny Alexander is about two of my favorite topics: Writing and Dreams. I have been having a lot of intense dreams lately. I had one with a Black Jaguar in it recently (The Jaguar has been a big theme for me this year — I had a vision of a jaguar in a shamanic journey I did early this year). I haven’t read the entire book yet, but this is a truly exciting book about deep creativity. Our ideas and creativity don’t come from nowhere — they come from the deep well inside us and from the collective unconscious. If you are interested in writing and/or dreams, you will enjoy this book.
P.S. If you are in the United States and are looking to buy one of these or another book, consider buying from Bookshop. Bookshop plays Rebel Alliance to Amazon’s Empire and a portion of the sale goes straight to indie bookstores. Here is a fabulous list of books and other gifts on Bookshop by my favorite bookstore East West Bookshop.
