As a sensitive creative & INFP personality type, I love dipping into new things. I am usually reading multiple books at a time. I love finding new tidbits and tasty morsels. Some of them go into the compost heap of my mind and help new ideas sprout.
Some of them are just fun and ways to fill myself up.
So, I thought I would do a post talking about some of the things I have been dipping into in the last few months.
I have watched a bunch of shows and movies on Netflix. I just saw the movie Dolomite is my Name, and I really loved it! It has Eddie Murphy playing real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer. I don’t know a lot about Moore, but I know how the movie made me feel.
It felt like it had been made by someone who loved Moore. Eddie Murphy was really funny and charming in the role. There’s a lot of racy stuff in the movie, so this isn’t one to see with the kids, but it’s really fun, atmospheric and surprisingly touching and heart-felt.
I also watched the latest season of Anne with an E series, which is based on Lucy M Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables children’s books. Anne was definitely one of my childhood heroines. It’s funny how, as a little quiet child, I could project myself into Anne and imagine myself as her.
When I first started watching the series, it was a bit of a shock to realize how talkative Anne was. I guess that’s the magic of books. There’s so much “scope for the imagination’ in them, as Anne would say.
As an adult, it’s also funny how your perspective changes. While the adventures of the spunky and highly imaginative Anne are at the center of the books, seeing the Netflix series made me think of how the real heroine and hero are actually Marilla and Matthew, the sister and brother duo who take the orphan Anne in and raise her as their own.
There’s a lot of talk about how Netflix might not renew Anne with an E, and if that happens, it will be really sad. This is one of those rare adaptations that actually does justice to a truly beloved book series.
Apart from these, I have been watching some dance cover videos on YouTube. I want to start dancing more. Dance is my first love, and I am also a big music lover. Here’s one video I watched in which the dancer combines Indian dance with western dance, which was really lovely to watch! The original song is from Padmaavat, an Indian movie set in the time when there were kings and queens. You can watch the original song here.
If you are interested in Indian movies and culture, a YouTube channel I would recommend is Our Stupid Reactions. Two American guys — Rick and Korbin — review Indian (mostly Hindi or what’s commonly called Bollywood) movies. I stumbled upon them a while back.
Apart from reacting to movie trailers, they also react to classical Indian dance and music, which is really cool. I have discovered so many artists through them!
If you are an artist looking for inspiration from a different culture, they are a very fun, accessible channel to dip your toe in with. I know there are certain cultures outside my own that really speak to me, like the French and the Japanese, and maybe India is one of those cultures for you.
This became quite long! I was going to write about some books and podcasts as well, but I’ll leave that for another day and let this by the fun, frothy post it’s turned out to be. If you are a movie or music lover like me, maybe, you discovered a little something that you’ll enjoy watching as well.
