I have been thinking of many things lately, one of which is highly sensitive people and how trauma affects them. Someone wrote to me recently asking me to write an article about it. I have also been reading more feminist literature lately as I think about my own place in the world as a woman (that dreaded, misread F word just means that we are all human beings and are entitled to equal rights and responsibilities.) I have been thinking about how much I need affirmative words and how insensitive words hurt me to the core. Negative words feel almost like an action to me. Their energy jumps out so. Affirming, life giving words are like balm on a wound.
This week, I want to introduce you to someone whose words and work, both, are healing. I came across Syma Kharal’s youtube channel recently. Syma is a Sacred Feminine Coach and Spiritual Healer. She is also a highly sensitive soul.
I stumbled upon Syma’s work while searching for more feminine ways of being.
I think one reason why the culture discounts HSPs might be because we have a holistic way of looking at things. That means that we value both sides – the masculine as well as the feminine. But, and this is a big but, cultures all over the world denigrate the feminine. So, most of us have a skewed relationship to the feminine, and in turn, to ourselves.
Even as a woman, I am still unearthing all the negative beliefs my Indian culture has passed on to me about women. Sometimes, I see my own self as weak when I am actually acting in a feminine way. Sometimes, I confuse femininity with passivity, something I might have seen in other women and now think of as feminine (but it’s not) and that becomes the reason behind discounting feminine ways of being. Because there is a masculine principle at play in every woman and a feminine principle at play in every man, the feminine is important for everyone, not just women.
The feminine principle is even more important in today’s world where the masculine has become an extreme version of itself without the feminine to keep it balanced.
Coming back to Syma, her wonderful work talks of the Sacred Feminine and its importance in our lives. And in this wonderful video, she talks about healing her sexuality as a sensitive person who was sexually abused as a child.
Traumatic events, by their very definition, are life changing. For highly sensitive people, trauma can go even deeper because of our differential susceptibility. What that means is just as the good sinks deep inside us and affects us deeply, the bad affects us as deeply. Traumatic events can leave us reeling under their after-shocks for years or decades to comes.
If you are someone who has suffered any kind of trauma, whether it is sexual or physical abuse or a life-changing accident, you need professional help. You need compassion and love.
If you are a sensitive soul whose sensitivity complicates healing even further, Syma’s sharing of her life and experiences might be the light that encourages you to go out and get help. Her experiences might also give you some pieces for your own healing journey. Please do check her out.
If you found this piece helpful, please share online or with someone who might find it helpful. Thank you.
